3 Essential Questions To Ask Before Investing In A Crowdfunding Portal

With the increasing popularity of crowdfunding and community-based methods of receiving financing, crowdfunding portals are proving to be a significant contender in the investment arena.

business dreamfund.png

With numerous crowdfunding portals raising their own capital, investors should consider 3 essential questions before investing in a crowdfunding portal.

  1. What are the team’s capabilities? The more success stories that are created by a particular portal, the more that other people seeking a successful fund raise will gravitate toward that portal. However, to create those success stories, the portal needs to have a team of marketing experts that specialize in crowdfunding. Crowdfunding has its own specific set of marketing best practices, and if the marketing department isn’t skilled in this area, the likelihood of creating success stories that snowball into more and more clients decreases significantly.

  2. What does the company care about? If the answer stops at collecting a commission, you might want to consider investing elsewhere. More and more, businesses who are truly invested in making a positive impact through the services and products that they provide are the ones that clients turn to again and again. It’s no longer enough to produce a check or a commission; people are becoming more concerned about being a force of good in the world.

  3. Are they providing scalable, long-term solutions that provide real value beyond the latest crowdfunding trends? Just like any technology-driven company, trends will come and trends will go – quickly. The key to longevity and success is the portal’s ability to offer real value to their clients. In other words, the portal’s ability to create life and wealth solutions for long-term success as opposed to simply facilitating disjointed crowdfunding campaigns with no long-term strategy is going to be able to survive the trends and be in business for the long haul.

Crowdfunding for Social Good: BTB Foundation and Rosie!

If you’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Rosie, her mom Jo, or her big sister Bella, well then you are in for a real treat; this family is inspirational. Strong, charismatic, and engaging are just some of the words used to describe this unwavering family of three. They embody social good.

Despite the mountain of hardships they have confronted over the last nine years following Rosie’s diagnosis of brain cancer in 2007, they continue to march on with strength and valor. Rosie faces much more then three inoperable brain tumors, she also has a second life threatening condition called Hydrocephalus; plus Neurofibromatosis (NF1), and Bilateral Optic Nerve Atrophy, all life long chronic illnesses. But, that’s not all, for seven years Rosie has also been dealing with Precocious Puberty and Pituitary Gigantism, a very rare and complex condition, but again, that’s not all, she also has issues with her heart, and has lived with extreme high blood pressure until 2015. Now add in low vision, poor balance, learning disabilities, Adjustment Disorder with Mixed Disturbance of Emotions and Conduct, ADHDC and panic attacks and it’s hard to imagine how this little girl has been able to deal with all of her medical demands for nine years. But there is still more; six different chemotherapy drugs, endless hospital visits, 9 brain surgeries, 14 additional surgeries, 100’s of tests, 1,000’s of needle pokes, IV’s and blood draws. It’s taken it’s toll not just on Rosie, but her sister and mother too.

rosie rockstar dreamfund.png

Leaving their family home in November of 2013 was a difficult choice, but one that had to be made for a more stable, safer environment and better quality of life. Complicating matters even more Rosie’s Mom filed for divorce, she was without financial support or a job, BTB Foundation came in and saved the day from near homelessness. Now confronted with financial ruin, unsteady employment, multiple job losses, bankruptcy, surrendering of her car, major medical challenges herself, four moves within 28 months and there beloved dog with cancer, diabetes and blindness now too! It’s more than anyone could take; but they manage to balance it all with an incredible faith and positive attitude all while reaching out to help others, raising funds and awareness for pediatric brain tumors, childhood cancer and NF.

The Colucci Girls host toy drives and run their organization, called Rosie’s Toy Box, together. Their efforts to preserver, their strong tenacity and shining spirits see them through time and time again. They try to rise above the difficulties, face their fears head on, and at times against all odds, astonish people with their commitment to serving others. If anyone is making lemonade out of lemons, it’s the Colucci Girls!

Rock Star Rosie, Super Sib Bella & Jo Mama are a passionate and kind bunch. Their mission is to provide family support by coming along side newly diagnosed families to show their understanding & care, to listen, provide encouragement and inform them about helpful foundations as they are ready. Their mission is to help to fund pediatric cancer research until there are better treatment options, more funds going into research and finally a cure.

Peer-to-Peer Success Story
One of our Dreamers recently raised over $3000 for The New England Center For Children, a school that his child with autism attends. With a simple email sent right from within DreamFund requesting donations in lieu of birthday gifts, 42 people were inspired to give. All in just a few days. The power of his family’s story raised both awareness and money for this important cause, and it was all made easier by using DreamFund.

Update on Haiti Projects Post Hurricane Matthew

The Story

This crowdfunding dream is to raise funds after Hurricane Matthew for Haiti Projects to help women in rural areas of Haiti. Haiti Projects is a 501(C)(3) corporation with focused initiatives to empower women of rural Haiti toward self-sufficiency.  They provide access to jobs at fair trade wages, education, health care, and avenues for building sustainable community.  Haiti Projects is located in the town of Fond des Blancs.

They are currently the second largest employer in a region of Haiti where over 40,000 people live with no electricity or public services. After Hurricane Matthew, as the country is rebuilding, let's support a charity that can help empower women in rural area to self sufficiency.
Why in Fond Des Blancs?

Fond des Blancs is located on the southern peninsula in rural Haiti.  The main town is Sainton and has a population of approximately 10,000.  Approximately 80% of people in this region don’t finish 5th grade.  Most rely on subsistence level farming, with high unemployment.  Haitian women are 20% more likely to be illiterate than men, with a male literacy level of about 64% and a female literacy rate of only 57%. In terms of economics, 44% of households are female-headed and of these women, 60% live in extreme poverty.

By providing rural Haitian women with employment at Fair Trade wages, Haiti Projects has had a tangible impact on raising the quality of life for those in need.

RAISES INCOME AND STRENGTHENS ECONOMY

Women report an average income increase of over 250% after working for Haiti Projects. This does not include the 32% of workers who were unemployed prior to working for the Women's Cooperative and who increased their income, on average, from 0 to 2150 gourdes per month.

Haiti Projects worker earn, on average, 262% more than the national minimum wage.

The Impact of our work is not easy to measure. How do you measure the dignity that a job brings, or the joy of watching your child attend school? How do you quantify the opportunity to buy a home, determine how many children you can afford or purchase livestock to raise for added income for your family? This graph show part of this story -- the numbers. The impact is clear and significant.
